This book is the story of a life.
In the first part it tells of the relationship between two people, one living, one ‘dead’ or, if you prefer, from both sides of the Great Divide.  I am here, living in this material world and Daniel, my dear friend, is living in the spirit world.  Together we relate how the book came to be written: the obstacles, the heartache, the sadness and the trauma of the telling of the sad tale and the lighter moments when Daniel took on his other persona, a clown.  Daniel’s life was unbelievably hard, unbelievably tragic and ended in the most horrific of circumstances.  It was tough going from beginning to end, but as I said to Daniel after one emotional communication in Circle, I consider it an honour to have been selected to channel it for him.
For those who like to know how things happen: with all communications from spirit, I am aware someone wishes to ‘write’ when my hands start tingling and there is an overwhelming urge to clear the screen and simply type the date.  Then the words come with such force that they have to be typed.  Most people actually physically write with pen on paper but my writing is so bad, after many years of typing, that it is illegible even to me.  Spirit communicators know this and are happy to use the modern technology of the computer to get their message across.
This is how this book has been written.  A pattern developed: I would deal with correspondence, maybe work on some other projects and then the tingling would begin and the book would continue its progress.  Sometimes we would write a single line, other times a paragraph.  Only toward the end of the book, as later communications show, did we ever reach the giddy heights of a page or more at a time.  At the very end we were writing several pages at a time, but always it was difficult, always it was traumatic and always it was emotional.
It has been like reading a book rather than writing it, for I never knew what was coming next.  In the early days, Daniel would often stop at a really critical point because he was unable to go on.  Then the whole of the next section would be literally thrown at me, like a bucket of cold water, in a split second at some point when I was least prepared for it – making a cup of tea, about to turn over to go to sleep – and I would then be aware of the next painful instalment and be emotionally ready for the words when they came.  It was as if Daniel needed to prepare me as much as himself for the next dreadful instalment of a nightmare of a life.  When I received these blasts, I understood only too well why he had stopped and why he felt it necessary to prime me before carrying on.  I was always grateful for the advance warning, for the time for mental preparation before once again channelling horrors of our modern world.
The book constantly surprised me, often moved me deeply and always interested me.  That one person could suffer so much in one relatively short life is almost unbelievable.  I ‘wrote’ it through a series of debilitating migraines, often in weariness after a day at work, always with New Age music to distract the thoughts as far as possible from the horrors which were being spelled out.  Such is the closeness between Daniel and myself that migraines and tiredness made no difference to the flow of the book.  If he was able to go on, we went on.  Sometimes there were tears, from Daniel or from me or, at times, from both of us.  There was one memorable night when I was so deeply involved in the book that, when I became aware of his tears, I reached for my handkerchief and handed it to him … If nothing else, it made him laugh.
From Day 1 the book has been called ‘Daniel – a Life’ and indeed it is hard now to remember a life without Daniel.  A life when I did not, stage by painful stage, transcribe a book which at times was almost too much for both of us.  When a medium did not turn to me on the platform where I chaired and asked: ‘why do I see a harlequin clown around you?’  Or my friend saying during my messages ‘you know who’s here and he’s making me laugh.’  A life when I did not at times feel fingers in my hair or hear an irreverent whisper in my ear.  A time when I was not aware of a loving vibration around me.  A time when I was not walking into a shop to buy a silly gift for my friend, the beautiful lady Daniel refers to, and finding myself wrapping the gift and adding the tag: to the beautiful lady, with love from Daniel. A time when, if something went missing, I had a pretty good idea who had taken it … It is very much as though he has always been there – the security is in knowing he always will be.
Life with Daniel is often fun - and that is something some mediums misunderstand.  When I told one medium that Daniel often throws my soft toys around or hides things, she said: ‘tell him to stop!  You wouldn’t allow a child to act that way, would you?” which completely missed the point that it was done to make me laugh and thus lift my spirits.  I now know to be very careful to whom I mention such things…
I have had items mysteriously disappear and then re-appear in unlikely places, I have had the aerial on the radio suddenly fall down to startle me, heard creaks and clicks and have had such outrageous things whispered in my ear at times that it has been hard to keep a straight face.  Once, when we had a large circle, he went round the entire group and made wicked comments about every sitter, which meant I could not pass on what was I receiving…
But to start at the beginning …
